How to ICT in HPE

Hey guys, found a really good piece from the PE Team website about using video recording as a means of assessment, have a read:

Video recording as assessment purpose:
The next, most complicated level, in the use of video in your classroom would be to use video for assessment. There are various ways and levels in which this can take place. Students could film themselves at the beginning of a unit and film themselves again at the end of a unit and compare and explain the improvement they have made in the process. Another option would be to film the end result where students perform an analysis on the action undertaken. A good app to use for these purposes would be either iMovie (when you do not require drawing on the clips) or Coaches Eye which does allow you to draw on the clips, giving the students a chance to analyse movements more critically. Both are applicable to handheld devices (iPod, iPad etc) and the final product can be emailed or uploaded directly to where the teacher would like to receive these.

My ICT Integration

The use of ICT in the HPE scene has been rewarding to implement. With the use of projectors in theory lessons and all the students having their very own laptops, it creates a efficient working environment for both teacher and student. However, the task has been implementing ICT apparatus in prac lessons. With most classes looking at either basketball or touch, it wasnt easy to intertwine the use of ICT. Anyway, I got onto the HPE staff and asked for heart rate monitors and stop watches to do a few little activities with the students. I strapped the heart rate monitors onto some of the students during game time scenarios and they were surprised how much the rate actual fluctuates. The stop watches were also used to time the boys during a dribbling sprint race with basketballs, which they loved due to teenage boys being encouraged through a little competition.

Here is just some of the few examples i have managed to accumulate over my time on prac

Effective ICT use in HPE

Hi guys,

Was just having a browse over the web for any new information on ICT use in a HPE scene and is tumbled across a little website that did give some vital points of information. Have a read of what he says here and then the outline he has put into place underneath:

Creating policies that not only provide professional development for teachers, but make it compulsory, would help the level of comfort that some educators may lack when confronted with integrating ICT into lessons. University Physical Education teacher program must also be updated to provide beginning teachers with the knowledge and practical experience needed to incorporate ICT into their teaching. Also a plan to improve integration of ICT in Physical Education:

1.    Planning the use of ICT within PE

     a.    Equipment audit

     b.    Setting priorities

2.    Developing departmental policy

     a.    Set out aims and values

     b.    Explain principles underlying the use of ICT in PE

     c.    Identify issues which need to be addressed

3.    Managing issues

     a.    Audit of ICT skills

     b.    Training to be provided

     c.    Continual monitoring and reviewing the use of ICT in PE

Cheers, Sam.

Timing is of the essence, but not in the way you might think.

Hey guys,

have a read of Justin’s post as i am sure he isnt alone with this situation. It can be hard to manage time when various students within a class take longer then others, especially when it is a crucial part of the learning. Thanks for the reflection and hope all is well with the rest of your prac and assignment 2.

On reflection of my last two previous blog posts (with an unintended assistance from ddekroon), it has come to my attention the importance of timing when using technology in the classroom.

In the comment that I made to the aforementioned blog post, I talk about the timing of the activity in the lesson that I taught that day. This is a crucial aspect to consider as we plan out units for assignment 2. One thing I have noticed about the human body unit that I am planning is that there is a LOT of content to cover. This unit could very easily take a whole term to teach properly. As a result I may have to cut a lot of content back.

Maybe I rushed it?

One thing that I failed to touch on in the post about trying the Geology lesson, was that some of the students struggled…

Good news comes to those who wait…. sometimes

Hi Jacob, hope all has been well over the few weeks of prac, haven’t heard from you for awhile, so hopefully you’re just flooded with prac work and learning all knew and wonderful things about the career before you. Let me know bud how you are going if you can and we can collaborate some of the info we have learnt. Maybe have a look at assignment 2 as well. Cheers bud!

Hey guys

So I have some good news, I have given a placement for prac. I think the prac lady was more relieved than I was to know that I will be able to given the opportunity to pass my degree. This is quite good news and the school in only approximately 20kms away so not too far and its going to be HPE for the majority so that is even better news. Now lets hope the site coordinator replies today so we can arrange a meeting so I have a rough idea on the content I will be teaching. I hope you all are bit more familiar with the school, mentor and content than I am at the moment. Quite glad that we don’t have to blog during our prac. Anyways, good luck everyone with their prac and no doubt most of you will blog about it when you…

Prac on top of everything

Hey guys, have been struggling over the last few weeks to put any type of constructive words on screen for my blog so apologies there. Prac has been my main focus obviously over the last few weeks and it is becoming a struggle to come home and then try and chip away at some assignment work. So hopefully all goes well over the next few weeks and i can rest easy over the mid year break with a few too many celebratory drinks with the lads. Definitely keen to get a little rowdy. On the plus side, prac at Ipswich Grammar has been an amazing experience and i have learnt tons from a very intellectual staff cohort here. The boys have been great and behaviour management hasn’t been an issue at all which has allowed me to practice some good solid teaching strategies.

Anyway, thanks for the listen guys, hopefully all your studies are going well.

Was it just me that was lazy over holidays?

Hey guys

So I received an email for David telling me that I’m quite close to not passing the whole learning journal. Not the nicest thing you want to wake up to on the first day back however, least it was a wake up call that the holidays are indeed over and that uni work must resume. Over these holidays, I must admit that not much uni work has been done other than the majority of assignment 2 for this course. I have pretty much disregarded my other assignments for every other subject so hopefully fingers crossed, thing will plan out and magically they will get done!

Also just some happy news for some, the assignment has been apparently extended for a week!

Happy Blogging

Old dog new tricks

Oh Scotty has killed it here kids, great little personal story that is transparent with many situations we face as teacher. Moving away from the age bracket, lets take a look at SES (socio-economic status). Learners from different SES backgrounds may not be privileged enough to experience these forms of technology within their everyday life. Therefore, as educators, if we are able to open their eyes to a whole new form of researching, evaluating and justifying through the use of apps and search engines (the list does continue on), we would be doing that student a world of goodness.

Have a read guys of the original and see if you agree and/or have any other suggestions.

I am struggling to find new forms of technology or different way to use it, however, my parents aren’t. It seems that what seems common place can be such a distant idea for my elders. It was today at lunch when my mother wanted to know the netball scores so I thought I would just see if there was an app to check the scores. There was. It was hard for my mother to comprehend how I knew there would be an app for the netball. She couldn’t understand why I would think there was an app and why I would just search it. My mother is pretty up to date with her technology use and yet this strand of thought hasn’t developed yet. Weather this is due to her experience with apps or her embedded thought process that is yet to have changed, I don’t know. Just an interesting…

Back into it!

Hey team, i dont know about anyone else but i got a little slack there over the Easter break with my postings, but now we are back into the work and kicking butt with assignment 2. Looking at the extension we have all been granted, i dont think i will need that as closing time on this second piece is right around the corner. Leaving it until the extensions due date may just cause some unwanted stress amongst other courses and their assessment pieces. Anyway, just thought i would get amongst the blogging scene again and look forward to sharing all things ICT in education for another few weeks.

Cheers,

Sam
